Lithuania has a rich history of higher education and a welcoming atmosphere for international students. Foreign students can pick from more than 350 study programs offered in English at a range of Lithuanian universities. Students have the option of attending classes full-time or part-time. Spring admissions are available at a number of universities.
The Latvian higher education system is a part of the Bologna process, and follows the 3-cycle system:
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is used to evaluate each study program, with each year of study receiving 60 ECTS credits.
You can choose to study for a Bachelor's degree or a professional certification during the first cycle if you have completed 180 - 240 ECTS. You will earn a bachelor's diploma after successfully completing the course, whether with or without professional quantification. You will obtain a Higher Educational Diploma if you just wish to study for a professional qualification.
If you are in the second cycle (or plan to be) and wish to pursue a Master's degree or a specialized professional certification, one of the alternatives available to you is to enroll in one of the integrated study programs. These programs integrate first- and second-cycle university studies. The successful graduates are awarded a Master’s Diploma which testifies to their Master’s degree status. You can also attain a professional qualification. If you are studying for the Master’s Diploma (which is only offered at universities) you have to obtain 90 – 120 ECTS credits.
Students in the third cycle pursue a postgraduate (PhD) degree. This could be for a Doctorate, a Residency (for those studying medicine or veterinary science, for example), or a postgraduate arts diploma. A university or a university and science institute together offer postgraduate studies.
